Bacon Sandwich – carnivorous comedy

Bristol writer Tim Massey’s new play, Bacon Sandwich, debuts at the Alma Tavern in Clifton from 14 to 19 May.

The 75-minute comedy is set early in the morning of Wendy and Greg’s wedding day.  In the aftermath of some serious prenuptial boozing, the bride and chief bridesmaid wake up stranded on a train while the groom and best man are guests of the local constabulary.

‘It’s about the reality gap in relationships,’ says Tim.  ‘Two of the characters dream of wedded bliss, the other two are cynical singletons.  But all are deluded in their own way.’

Bacon Sandwich is Tim’s follow-up to Have-a-Go Hero, which scored a hit at the Alma last July and went on to success at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.  The play is being presented by cpa@uwe, a company based in the Centre for Performing Arts at the University of the West of England.

The four-strong cast comprises Bristol Old Vic Theatre School graduate Nick Wilkes, who appeared in Coriolanus at the Tobacco Factory earlier this year; Murray Andrews, whose professional experience includes a recent tour of Waiting for Godot; Rachael Catley-Lane and Nicola Rope. Rachael and Nicola are first and second year English and Drama and English and Geography joint-honours students at UWE. Both are from Cleethorpes in Humberside and appeared together in a UWE Drama Society production of William Mastrosimone’s Extremities last year.

UWE drama tutor Ned Milne, who also directed Have-a-Go Hero, directs the play, while the production’s designer is Bristol Old Vic Theatre School student Jess Wright.  Jess’s work includes the set design for the School’s production of Pericles in the New Vic Studio in February.

Bacon Sandwich is supported by UWE; M J Rees and Company Ltd chartered land surveyors; and South West Arts through local writers’ group Southwest Scriptwriters.

Performances are at 9pm nightly from 14 to 19 May with a 7pm matinée on Saturday 19 May.  Tickets priced £5 (£4 concs) can be reserved by calling the Alma Tavern bookings line, 0117 946 7899, during the week of production, or from the UWE box office, 0117 344 2334, or by emailing tickets@baconsandwich.org.uk before then.

Updates on the play will be posted on the production’s website – www.baconsandwich.org.uk.
