PRESS RELEASE – 10 August 2000 Have-a-Go Hero Hits EdinburghHave-a-Go Hero, an explosive satire by Tim Massey, opens at Venue 45, Old St Paul's Church and Hall, on the Edinburgh Festival Fringe on Sunday 13 August, playing nightly at 10.45pm until Saturday 19 August. The one-hour drama centres on what happens when self-made security systems company boss Dean Stepford takes out a burglar with a baseball bat. The enraged entrepreneur and his wife debate whether to call in the law or dish out some instant justice Tony Martin-style. This quandary is complicated when the thief regains consciousness and threatens to slap an assault charge on his captor. The production arrives in Edinburgh hotfoot from a five-performance debut in Bristol's Alma Tavern. 'Although the subject is serious,' wrote the Bristol Evening Post, 'plenty of sick, and at times moving, humour knocks you off your feet.' Have-a-Go Hero is presented by cpa@uwe, a company formed specially for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2000. Based within the University of the West of England's Centre for Performing Arts, cpa@uwe brings together students and staff from UWE, the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and a RADA graduate. The play is Tim Massey's second theatre production this year following the 'deliciously sarky' (Venue) Touchy Feely that debuted in the New Vic Studio at the Bristol Old Vic in May. Tim is a postgraduate student working towards a PhD in Creative Writing with Cardiff University. The play is directed by Edinburgh-born UWE drama tutor Ned Milne whose previous Festival Fringe experience includes productions with Oxford Samuel Beckett, The Red Rose (Lancaster) and Bath University Student Theatre. 'Have-a-Go Hero is black comedy with white knuckles,' says Ned, 'It's a terrific adrenalin cocktail.' Have-a-Go Hero was developed with Bristol writers' group Southwest Scriptwriters.
