PRESS RELEASE – 3 September 2001
Caustic Comedy at the QEH
cpa@uwe presents two comedies by Bristol writer Tim Massey at the QEH Theatre, Jacob’s Wells Road, Bristol on 26 and 27 October.
The company, comprising staff and students from the University of the West of England’s Centre for Performing Arts, Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and local actors, reprises its Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2000 success Have-a-Go Hero and premieres a new play Christmas with Johnny and Dee in a double-bill called Acid Drops.
Acid Drops is cpa@uwe’s follow-up to Tim’s comedy Bacon Sandwich which played to sell-out audiences at the Alma Tavern in May. Picking the show as the week’s theatrical ‘Best Bet’, the Bristol Evening Post commented that Bacon Sandwich served up ‘Acid humour with a twist.’
October’s show is an opportunity to see an all-new production of Have-a-Go Hero which won cpa@uwe a nomination as ‘Best Student Company’ of last year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe from britishtheatre.about.com’s Peter Lathan. The 50-minute satire focuses on what happens when a self-made security man takes out a burglar with a baseball bat and has to decide whether to call in the law or dish out some instant justice.
Christmas with Johnny and Dee is an hour-long swipe at the pleasure and pain of the festive season. The saddest men in Bristol hijack a bus and force everyone on board to spend Christmas with them.
Christmas with Johnny and Dee will be directed by UWE drama tutor Ned Milne – who also directed Bacon Sandwich and the original production of Have-a-Go Hero – and Acid Drops is designed by BOVTS graduate Jess Wright, who also designed May’s production of Bacon Sandwich.
Tickets priced £8 (£5 concessions) can be reserved from the QEH box office on 0117 925 0551 or by emailing bookings@qehtheatre.com. Seats may also be booked by credit card (including a 50p booking fee) from the Bristol Old Vic box office on 0117 987 7877 or by minicom on 0117 926 4388.
Updates on the show will be posted on the production’s website – www.timmassey.co.uk/acid-drops.
